Interview: Martha Buldain Formulator of OHA BioActive Organic Skin Care

Martha, tell us about your background, training and how you came to start your own skin care company.

I had a natural interest in herbs, and began reading Jethrow Klauss/Back to Eden in my early teenage years and playing around with herbs. One day a friend and I went to Santa Fe (I’m from Albuquerque) and took the backway home. There was an unusual tourist attraction in Golden, NM called the “Glass Bottle Garden”. As this site was originally a stagecoach stop, it was filled with antique liquor and medicine bottles. Our curiosity piqued, so we stopped in. It turned out the proprietor (Ardell) was an herbalist and out of nowhere asked if I would like to study herbs with her. I did, off and on for about 18 months. I moved from NM, and my passion for herbs transitioned to essential oils. About 20 years later, I became a massage therapist and started making my own products for my clients. In addition, I did some teaching of reflexology and aromatherapy. Because of the success I started having with my clients and classes and a brief encounter with supplying Nordstrom with some of my products, I decided to make an over the top natural skin care line that would involve my communication with the plants to guide me and a comprehensive model including nutritional supplements, minerals and flower essences. This inclusive model is still unsurpassed in the current market, even with thousands of competitors.

How is the OHA skin care system different from other brands?

The OHA skin care “SYSTEM” involves a unique blending and layering method that allows clients to receive the benefits of an entire skin care system in 3-5 minutes, two times a day. It is simple, sensuous and super effective! The system  includes: 1.Cleanse 2.Exfoliate 3.Tone 4.Treat and 5.Protect. What are the benefits?  The benefits include: 1. dewy and moist skin 2. rejuvenating elasticity and firmness 3. reduction of wrinkles 4.bright and even skin tone and 5.noticeable improvement in skin texture. 6.natural UV protection (this term can be translated as supression of UV damage).  In addition, the ingredients and packaging are incredibly clean, non toxic to your face, body and the environment. It’s like being able to “get your green on” and being rewarded with fabulous skin.

The biggest concern I hear from women is that they want to be assured that natural/organic skin care is as effective as the department store/drug store brands they’ve been using.  What’s your opinion on that?

I can understand people’s reluctance to change, however even with a small amount of research/investigation these same women would discover and should be more concerned about the toxicity that department/drug store brands use. For those companies, marketing is the key factor in their dollar investments, not ingredients. Most of these companies, for example still package their products in plastic. Not only is this hazardous to the environment, but certain components, phthlates for example, leach into the product, then into our bodies and finally into the sewage and water systems. As far as effectiveness, you only need to try the products for a few days to see the response your skin will have. Because we put our money into the ingredients, it shows up on you skin. Specifically we use organic ingredients, that are active on your skin – 2 types of Vitamin E, 2 types of esterfied vitamin C, MSM, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Coenzyme CoQ10, highly unusual and therapeutic essential oils, trace minerals from the Great Salt Lake and Canadian flower essences to achieve overall skin health, deliver anti aging benefits and skin radiance. We are packaged in dark glass, which protects the valuable ingredients and is completely recyclable and non toxic to the water, soil and air.

What are some of the most beneficial ingredients that you use?  What are the benefits?

Most companies focus on one or two ingredients. OHA has been designed to showcase a team of expert ingredients, all working together to create an effective skin care system.  As a result OHA’s formulations are founded on a different concept from our competitors with intended broader outcomes. We are not just a cosmetic, although we do achieve cosmetic benefits. But moreover, it is both highly therapeutic and medicinal. When you treat the skin, you are after severalgoals such as: great looking skin, integrity of the immune system and support of the skin. The skin being not only your largest organ, but a SENSORY organ. It relays vital information to the brain, and nervous system. The skin’s overall health is connected also to your respiratory and cardiovascular system. In order to try to answer your questions, only beneficial ingredients have been chosen. Alone they would not be as effective as they are in concert with each other.  These  benefits are: 1. Anti-oxidant 2. Anti-inflammatory 3. Cell Regenerative 4.Lipd barrier protection (AKA Epidermis) 5. Structural support of collagen

Some women seem resistant to using oils on their faces.  The Intensive Nutrient Complex contains several oils.  Can you help us understand the importance of this serum?

This question is really more about the physiology of skin. To begin with lets create an easy picture – that of salad dressing. Suppose you put in you 1 cup of water and then you add 1/4 cup of oil. What happens? The oil floats to the top and just sits there. That is a good diagram for the skin. Your skin is what keeps the water in your body and in this case your face.  Skin cells are mainly composed of lipids aka fats and they form a film comprised of lipids.Lipids are part of oils, not water. In the epidermis this film prevents major water loss, and provides antibacterial and fungicidal protection from the outside environment. In addition cell membranes are composed of fats/lipds/oils and assist with nutrient apsorbtion. Therefore using oils is an essential part of caring for the skin. Not to mention that most anti-oxidants are oil, not water soluable. Now, there has to be some qualifications of oils and their structures. Oils high in essential fatty acids are similar to the structure and composition of our skin. They are easily absorbed and contain vital nutrients to be delivered into the cells. Without natural moisturizing factors, the water in your skin would soon evaporate and the skin becomes dry and cracked. Keeping water in your skin is also key to nutrient absorption as water transports nutrients in and transports waste out of cells.  The Intensive Nutrient Complex is made up of many oils rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9′s as well as other essential fatty acids. There are important antioxidants, 2 forms of Vitamin E (tocopherol and tocotrienol), an oil soluable form of Vitamin C (esterfied), Alpha Lipoic Acid, 4 Supercritical Extracts, essential oils of Rosemary, Sandalwood, Frankinscence. This product is designed to be effective in maintaining moisture, nourishing the cells, providing natural UV protection,  reducing inflammation and regenerating damaged cells. It is highly absorptive and will not create pimples. It is the most concentrated product we have and hugely popular because our customers find it so beneficial.  As a side note, mineral oils and petroleum oils have a much different chemical composition from our skin and provide a heavy film, making it hard for the skin to let anything in or out.  They can be useful in extreme cases, like severe diaper rash or sunburn, but OHA has nothing to do with those types of oils.

I love the name of your company – OHA (Organic Healthy Aging). Any advice for healthy aging of the skin in addition to using OHA BioActive Skin Care?

Truly, one cannot “anti-age” but certainly one can healthy-age! As so often recommended, LOTS of water drinking. The addition of electrolytes really helps water keep our bodies hydrated. The extra addition of 3-4 drops of Lemon essential oil help us stay detoxified, and effectively fight viruses and bacteria and makes the water taste lovely. Glass or stainless steel water vessels of course. Also drinking green tea. Supplementation of CoQ10, Vitamins C & E, Alpha Lipoic Acid and enzymes to help us utilize the nutrients in our food – notice many of the same ingredients that are contained in the skin care products. Deep breathing exercises, walking and yoga of course. Plenty of rest. Eat organic and juice whenever possible. Spend at least 3-5 minutes a day saying wonderful things about yourself  and to yourself. Be grateful not only for your life, but the beauty that is you.

Thank you Martha for the wealth of information. And thank you for creating the OHA products that we love so much!

Dry Skin Brushing

I’ve known about dry brushing for years but just started doing it on a regular basis. This is an easy, inexpensive way to exfoliate the skin on your body with lots of health benefits. Forget the jars of expensive body scrubs or even making your own with salt or sugar and oils. The only thing you need for this technique is your dry body and a natural bristle brush. The brush I use has a short handle which I purchased for $8.

How to dry brush:

Stand naked in the shower. The water is off and your body is dry.
Starting with the bottom of the feet, brush in a small circular motion with only the slightest bit of pressure so it feels good, but doesn’t hurt. Tops of the feet are next, then move up the legs one at a time, thighs, hips, butt always moving upward toward the heart. Move to the fingers, palms and tops of the hands brushing up the arms, under the arms, the chest. Be careful around the breasts and of course avoid the nipples. Starting at the waistline, do your small circles on the abdomen and stomach then move up the back, to the shoulders, back of the neck and even your scalp if you want to.

Don’t get hung up about the right or wrong way to dry brush.
It should only take 3-5 minutes and is best done twice a week.

When finished brushing, turn on the shower and rinse away all those dead skin cells. I use very little soap following my dry brush routine.

Benefits:

  • exfoliates dead skin cells leaving the body feeling smooth, soft and glowing
  • stimulates and increases circulation
  • helps the body flush out toxins through the skin
  • stimulates the lymphatic function for improved health
  • may help with cellulite

Give it a try.   Your body will thank you just in time for summer.

Review of The Healthy Home

The subject of The Healthy Home is of great interest to me and something I’ve been studying and reading about for years.  This is not just another “how to go green” book.  I learned so many new facts from Dr. Wentz and his son, that it was a very worthwhile read.

The review below will appear in Mindful Metropolis.  Here’s a preview:

The Healthy Home

Dr. Myron Wentz & Dave Wentz

We all want to feel better and live a long healthy life, but it’s not easy because of the toxic world we live in. The authors of The Healthy Home explain that our homes may be the best place to start making small changes in order to minimize our risks and create a healthier environment. They guide readers through a typical home room-by-room pointing out hidden dangers such as: indoor air is more polluted than outside air; fluoride in our water and toothpaste is poisonous; regular bar soap is safer than anti-bacterial washes; non-stick cookware at high temperatures release toxic gases that have actually killed pet birds; and plastic, which has become such a part of our lives, has got to go.

Filled with helpful quizzes, thought-provoking cartoons and side bars of scientific facts and studies, this is a comprehensive guidebook of simple solutions to help any family begin to lessen their toxic burden.

(The authors will donate 100% of their proceeds from sales of The Healthy Home to nonprofit organizations, the most notable being Children’s Hunger Fund.)

Allure – The Beauty Expert

“Beauty has started wars and inspired sonnets.  It’s serious and superficial.  Beauty is about a dream of a better self.”           Linda Wells, Editor in Chief, Allure Magazine

I have been a fan of Allure magazine since it came out 20 years ago.  I was a few years into my career as a makeup artist when I bought the very first issue.  A magazine devoted to makeup and beauty…….WOW!   I’ve kept my subscription all these years.

Last night I sat for 2 hours and read the April issue cover to cover.  It’s the special “Get Gorgeous Skin” issue.  And ladies, I highly recommend it.  Lots of information about skin care, new treatments, makeup tips from the world’s top artists with a little bit of fashion and gossip thrown in.  I always read the Letter from the Editor.  Linda Wells is so cool.

Allure isn’t perfect.  Sure, I got pissed at them when they put Britney Spears on the cover and thought about dropping my subscription.  I even wrote a letter to the editor about that one.  No response, but I forgave them.

I love Vanity Fair , a good book  and drinking coffee with my husband on Sunday mornings while we read The Chicago Tribune.  But I have to say that when my new Allure arrives each month, I still get excited.

Spring 2011 Makeup

Think pink!  Light, dark, bright, soft, matte or glossy are all good as long as the color is pink.

The look for spring is all about colorful lips and cheeks in shades of pink.  Neutral eye makeup works best with this look – brown shadow (you can even use your bronzer), a touch of a light shadow under the brow bone, black or dark chocolate eyeliner and a couple of coats of mascara.

The only challenge  is –  warm pink or cool pink?  Girls with yellow/golden skin tones (like me) will want to choose a clear pink or a peachy pink.  Beauties with pink undertones, look best in pinks that are cool, no coral or peach.  Lilac/violet pinks will look great.

Try cream blush that can double as a lip stain.  Very pretty, very natural-looking.  But skip cream and use a powder blush if your skin is really oily.

The look for spring is one of my favorites.  Clean, fresh and pretty.

Guest Blog: Is Beauty Really Only Skin Deep?

An interesting and important  book is coming out next week. The Healthy Home is about the dangerous substances  that we may be exposed to on a daily basis, and the simple but effective changes we can start making to help us reduce the toxic burden of living in the modern world.  This is my kind of book!

I was lucky enough to receive a copy and am reading it now.  Look for a review in a couple of weeks.  More information about the book and authors is at the end of this post.

Here’s the guest blog that the authors have given me to share with my readers:

Is Beauty Really Only Skin Deep?

Seven Steps for a Looking Better — From the Inside Out
By Dr. Myron Wentz and Dave Wentz
Authors of The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family From Hidden Household Dangers

At one time or another, we’ve all heard the saying that beauty comes from within. This saying means more than you know. How well you look on the outside greatly depends on how well you take care of your body on the inside. Your daily habits, whether good or bad, greatly contribute to how healthy your cells are, and, in turn, how youthful or how aged you look.

If you want to look better, you have to take better care of your body on the cellular level. Here are seven things you can start doing today that will improve the way you look and feel, from the inside out.

Diet
Your skin is your largest and most visible organ, yet it is the last to receive nutrients from the body. Keep your skin healthy (and looking good) by eating foods rich in protein and healthy fats. Healthy fats like monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, along with key amino acids and protein, are crucial for collagen formation and cell repair. Lean meats like chicken and fish, along with avocado, nuts, and olive oil, provide these critical nutrients. Additionally, foods high in antioxidants, such as dark berries and leafy greens, help fight against free radicals that cause oxidative damage to your cells.

Water
Aside from eating right, you should also stay hydrated. Why? Your body is made up of more than 10 trillion cells, and they all need water to operate at an optimal level. Water helps your cells keep their shape, and acts as a conduit for healthy, necessary biochemical processes within your cells to take place. Our bodies are more than 60 percent water, so replenishing lost fluids throughout the day is necessary for healthy cells and glowing, healthy skin. There are many sports drinks and fruit juices out there claiming to “rehydrate,”but purified water is best. Drink eight to 12 eight-ounce cups of water a day.

Supplements
If you are like the average American adult, you are not getting the nutrients your body requires to function at its best. Poor eating habits consisting of processed, fatty, sugary foods can lead to many health concerns, including erratic blood sugar levels and obesity. Even if you try your best to eat the freshest fruits and vegetables, you are probably still lacking several key nutrients because it’s difficult to consume the amount of nutrients your body needs to function properly with food alone. To help ward off malnutrition, supplement a healthy diet with high-quality vitamins and minerals. Studies show that synergistic vitamin and mineral blends yield better results than taking individual nutrients on their own.

Every body is different, so start with a high quality multivitamin or vitamin pack and then customize additional nutrients as needed. And remember: it could take several months of consistently taking your vitamins to see visible results. Just know you’re doing your body a favor by giving it exactly what it needs to function at an optimal level.

Sleep
There is a reason it’s called “beauty sleep.” Getting quality rest in a good quantity — 6–8 hours — every night gives your body and mind a chance to recuperate from the stresses of the day. But this is also the time when your cells repair themselves. If this process is disrupted, it will show on your face through puffiness, dark circles, and uneven skin tone. If you have trouble falling asleep, there are a few natural options. A melatonin supplement can work with your body’s natural melatonin production to help you achieve optimal rest for renewed energy. Try incorporating a repetitive habit into your daily bedtime routine to help mentally trigger your brain to shut down for the night. Reading is one such activity. Regular exercise can also improve the quality of your rest. Speaking of exercise. . .

Exercise
Regular cardiovascular and strength training will not only help you feel better; it will help you look better too. Regular exercise can boost your mood and improve your sexual drive, and sweating during exercise helps cleanse your pores of toxins to reveal brighter, healthier-looking skin.

Quit Smoking
Smokers are basically asking their skin to age faster. Nothing damages your skin and overall health more. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow. This depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients, such as vitamin A, that are important to skin health.”Smoking also reduces your skin’s elasticity, which will increase those lines on your forehead and around your eyes. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/skin-care/SN00003

Stop Stressing
It may be hard to believe, but the mental strain caused by stress can also tax the body. Excessive stress can lead to all sorts of damage, including high blood pressure and heart disease. But it also causes skin damage, including wrinkles and breakouts. Managing your stress correctly can produce positive results on how you look and feel. Even just a few minutes of silent meditation or deep breathing can help calm and de-stress the body and the mind.

One Last Thought
Your skin will eventually age — that is inevitable. But simple steps like the ones listed above can keep the signs of aging at bay for as long as possible.

It’s also important to remember that not all skin care products are made with the highest quality ingredients and are best for your skin. Stay away from products that contain harsh chemicals and preservatives that actually speed up the aging process and will eventually cause more harm than good.
Remember, your skin is the last organ to receive nutrients from the body and often the first to show signs of nutritional deficiency. Proper nutrition and a well-balanced diet are truly the key factors for overall health and beauty.

Replace Body Lotion First

What we put on our skin absorbs into our bodies. Knowing this hopefully will get you thinking about all the personal care products you use. Making the switch to natural/toxin-free products can be simple and stress-free. You can do it one product at a time. When you finish your shower gel, replace it with a “cleaner” version. Ready for a new moisturizer? Read the labels before making your next purchase.

Body lotion/cream is an important place to start. This is something that covers a whole lot of area. And products that we leave on for long periods of time allow for the most absorption of ingredients. Also, think about how many times a day you might reapply hand cream.

Here is an ingredient list for a popular drug store body lotion:

Water, Glycerin, Stearic Acid, Glycol Stearate, Petrolatum, Isopropyl Palmitate, Glycine Soja Sterol (Soybean), Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil (Sunflower), Glycine Soja Oil (Soybean), Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Protein (Oat), Sodium Stearoyl 2 Lactylate, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) (Vitamin E Acetate), Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A) (Vitamin A Palmitate), Carbomer, Lecithin, Keratin, Dimethicone, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sodium PCA, Potassium Lactate, Lactic Acid, Collagen Amino Acids, Mineral Water, Fragrance (Parfum), Triethanolamine, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Urea, Methylparaben, DMDM Hydantoin, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Disodium EDTA, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891)

Compare this to an ingredient list for an organic body lotion:

organic soybean oil, organic jojoba oil, organic apricot kernel oil, organic cocoa butter, distilled water, vegetable based glycerin, vegetable based wax, vitamin E, grapefruit seed extrat

Ingredient list for my favorite organic body cream:

organic shea butter, organic essential oil of lavender, vitamin E

You don’t have to be a chemist to figure out the better choice.

Interview with a “SKIN” Expert

Stephanie Simkins, founder/formulator

An enjoyable part of my business is getting to know the women behind the products that I carry at IF A GODDESS WORE MAKEUP.  I work pretty closely with them – placing orders, testing new products, getting questions from clients answered and receiving on-going training about their brands.  One of these women is Stephanie Simkins, owner and formulator of SKIN.  Her line meets all my criteria – no harmful chemicals, parabens, synthetic dyes or fragrance, no SLS or animal products.  But what she puts into her all natural/organic products is where it gets really interesting – free-radical, age-fighting antioxidants, anti-inflammatory nutrients, premium essential oils and nourishing nut and seed oils.  And I love this, everything is made in small batches by hand by Stephanie.

I recently was able to do an interview with Stephanie.

Me: What is your background and how did you come to start making skin care products and launch your brand SKIN?

Stephanie: My background is in holistic nutrition consulting and organic foods. I had been trying to find the best chemical free products for my clients as well as for myself for quite a long time, and while I was in herbalist school, I discovered that I could actually make them myself, so I combined my love of holistic healing, whole foods, and nutrition, along with the use of organic oils and botanicals to create products I believe will nourish your mind, body and spirit.

Me: Can women be assured that natural/organic skin care products will perform as well and give them the same results that the commercial products claim to do?  I get this question a lot from my clients.

Stephanie: Absolutely they can, minus the chemicals and synthetics!  Unless you have an allergy to natural ingredients, and then sometimes it’s a matter of finding which ones work the best for you.

Me: Why do you feel it’s important to use skin care free of synthetic ingredients and chemicals?

Stephanie: The more toxins we can remove from our body the better our overall health will be. Skin care is one thing we can control, unlike the air we breathe or other toxins in everyday surroundings, so why wouldn’t we lower our toxic load if we are able to. Findings show that many chemicals associated with health hazards are stored and accumulate in the body,  many passing onto unborn children. Research shows there may be long term, gradual effects linked to chemical ingredients used in cosmetics and skin care, such as cancer.

Me: What are some of the most beneficial ingredients to look for?

Stephanie: Depending on your skin type, rosehip seed oil is anti-aging and helpful for oily skin.  Tea tree, lemongrass, and witch hazel are better for acne. Sea buck thorn oil is great for dry skin, and jojoba is good for all skin types. I love green tea extract and blue/green algae, as in my Daily Greens cream for its antioxidant benefits.  Argan  oil in the Daily Greens is anti-aging as well making it one of my favorite products for most skin types.

Me: What are some of the worst/harmful ingredients to watch out for?

Stephanie: Parabans, parabans, parabans!  Synthetic anything, triclosan, petroleum, polyethylene glycol (PEG)¸fragrance, dioxane. None of these are necessary!

Me: You have beautiful skin.  Want to share some of your beauty secrets?

Stephanie: Keep it clean!  Use gentle cleansers.  Never pick at your skin, it can scar! If you need to extract always have a professional do it.  Keep it exfoliated, with gentle natural ingredients.  Keep it moisturized, even if you have oily skin like mine, and  never put chemicals on  your skin!  Face or body.  Use a sunscreen without chemicals.

Thanks Stephanie for sharing your expertise.  By the way, my absolute favorite product by SKIN is Fruity Face Scrub.

Gabriel Cosmetics – a classic

Finding great skin care products in the world of natural beauty is not as much of a challenge as finding great natural makeup.  Ingredients of course are important, but the makeup has to perform as well.  I was used to working with Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier,  Chanel and MAC makeup before “going green”.   After lots of research and testing, I decided on Gabriel Color Cosmetics.  I carry three other brands of makeup, but consider Gabriel to be my basic, go-to line for most of my clients.

Gabriel Cosmetics was conceived and developed by Gabriel DeSantino.  As a child, he observed his grandmother making homeopathic cosmetics from herbs that he helped her gather by her home near the ocean in Mexico.  When he entered the beauty industry as a young man, he used his grandmother’s wisdom along with continued research to create his brand.

Gabriel products are made from 100% natural ingredients,  no synthetic chemicals are used, no animal testing and the packaging is eco-friendly.

But here’s what really grabbed me about the makeup – it reminds me of Bobbi Brown’s line when she first came out with 10 lipsticks, followed by a very compact line of basic color in 1991.  Gabriel Color like Bobbi Brown (used to be) has neutral, earth-tone shades at the core, never  discontinues a color,  there are no seasonal colors, nothing trendy or flashy.  It’s makeup paired down to the basics.  It always works and always looks good.   I refer to this as classic, timeless beauty –  think Grace Kelly rather than Lady Gaga.

To your health and beauty!

Picking the Perfect Red Lipstick

Bobbi Brown (makeup artist extraordinaire) once declared that there’s a perfect red lipstick for everyone, and I believe her.

Bold, red lips are fun and sexy this time of year and not just when you’re wearing black for evening.  I love red lipstick with a casual day look like jeans and a sweater.

The secret to choosing the correct shade is in the undertones.  The majority of women have a cool/pink undertone to their skin and the rest of us are warm with a yellow/golden undertone.  That’s all you need to know.  If you can’t tell by looking at your face, look at the inside of your lower arm.  It’s usually pretty obvious.  You’ll notice pink with blue veins or yellow with almost green looking veins.

Those with cool undertones will look best in a pinky-red, blue-red or cranberry.  Warm undertone complexions do well with orangy-red, copper-red or brown-red.

To achieve the look:

  • Even out skin with foundation/concealer where needed.  It’s important to eliminate any red blotchiness on the face when going for the red lips.
  • Blush should be subtle like a pinky-brown shade or just a touch of bronzer.
  • For a fresh modern look, go easy on the eye makeup.  Black eye liner and mascara with a neutral shadow (matte or shimmer) on the lower lid is all you’ll need.
  • I prefer red lips to be matte rather than all glossed up.   Apply lipstick then follow with a matching lip liner pencil.  The pencil fills in lines, prevents feathering and gives a flawless look.

Color suggestions by Gabriel Cosmetics:

cool reds –     Matte Spice lipstick with Berry pencil
Currant lipstick with Red pencil

warm reds –  Maple Shimmer lipstick with Spice pencil
Tearose lipstick with Red pencil

Think of red lipstick as a fun accessory. Feeling a little shy?  Skip the pencil and apply the lipstick lightly as a stain.

To your health and beauty!
